CAN WE TALK? PHYSICAL INTERACTIVE BACK
Can We Talk? was produced for the American Museum of Natural History’s 2010 traveling exhibition Brain: The Inside Story. This hands-on interactive challenges visitors, in a playful way, to repeat phrases accurately in six very different languages. Our goal was to demonstrate that while all humans are “wired” for language, we develop expert intonation in the languages we speak at an early age, but we may lose the ability to pronounce unfamiliar sounds if we don’t develop those brain circuits early in life. A video host and native speaker of each language greet users and starts by prompting them to repeat a phrase. Using the microphone users record each try. The application renders a waveform of their voice, and displays it next to one from the host. Users can visually compare them and toggle between the recording of their own voice and a version from the host.
